Helping Your Parent Stay at Home Safely

For many older adults, staying in their own home is more than remaining in a familiar place. It's about maintaining independence, routines and being surrounded by a lifetime of memories. In many cases, staying at home is possible with the right support.

People are often surprised to hear this from a Realtor®, but I don't believe moving is always the first answer.

If your parent can continue living safely and comfortably in their own home, that may be the best decision for them. My role isn't to encourage families to sell their parent's home, it is to help families understand their options so they can make informed decisions.

Often, small changes can make a significant difference. Extra support may help your parent remain independent for months or even years.

Some examples include:

  • Home safety improvements such as grab bars, better lighting, or reducing trip hazards.
  • Housekeeping, yard maintenance, or help with household chores.
  • Grocery or meal delivery services.
  • Transportation to appointments and social activities.
  • Medication reminders or assistance with daily routines.
  • Home care services when additional support is needed.
  • Regular family visits and check-ins.

Sometimes it simply helps to have a second set of eyes.

I have walked this journey with my own family and I have also worked with many others facing similar questions. Sometimes families ask me to walk through the home with them, not because they're ready to sell, but because they want an honest perspective. Together, we can talk about what's working well, what may need attention and what options are available, without rushing into any decisions.

Every family's situation is different. Some parents continue living safely at home for many years with the right support. Others eventually decide that a move will provide a better quality of life. There isn't one solution that fits everyone.

Whether your parent remains in their home for another year, another five years, or eventually decides it's time for a move, my goal is the same, to help your family understand their options, make informed decisions and feel supported every step of the way.

If you'd like to talk through your family's situation or simply aren't sure where to begin, I'm always happy to be a resource.
