When Change Happens Gradually — Until It Doesn’t

I remember someone once saying during a class that something shifts when your parents turn 80. At the time, my mom was only 68. I didn’t think much of it — but I never forgot it.

My mom worked until she was 71 and easily could have continued. She drove until she was 84. In fact, the only reason she gave up her license was because her car lease was ending and she didn’t want to commit to another four years. Letting go of driving felt like letting go of her independence.

Looking back, I’m grateful she stopped when she did. The following year, everything began to change.

She became unsteady on her feet. She would forget we were picking her up for dinner. Small things at first — but noticeable.

For many families, change doesn’t arrive all at once. It begins subtly. Hearing declines. Joints become more painful. Walking slows. Stories are repeated. Appointments are missed.

Individually, these moments are easy to explain as “just aging.”

But over time, they add up.

Adult children gradually step in — scheduling appointments, helping with yard and home maintenance, researching hearing aids, checking in more often. The shift in roles happens quietly.

Families sense that conversations about additional support, living arrangements, or even the future of the family home will eventually need to happen — but they aren’t sure when or how to begin.

In my work with families facing later-life transitions, this is often where the questions start. Long before any formal decisions are made.

If you’re noticing these gradual changes and wondering what comes next, you’re not alone.
